DICOM Viewer
Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is the industry standard for handling, storing, printing, and transmitting information in medical imaging.
Patterned after the Open System Interconnection of the International Standards Organization, DICOM enables digital communication between diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and systems from various manufacturers.
Most DICOM Viewer are able to load a series of medical images stored in the DICOM format from the DICOM directory or query and fetch DICOM images from the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) over the network.
DICOM Viewer - network diagram
Have a look into the DICOM network diagram to illustrate the purpose of a DICOM Viewer. The different modalities (imaging systems) send medical objects in the picture archiving system (PACS). The physician is able to fetch these objects with a DICOM Viewer for review, diagnostic and presentation.
